History of Northside DFA

Northside DFA was founded in January of 2005 by Shannon Fisk and Sandra Verthein under the name Edgwater DFA. The picture shown here was taken at our first meeting at Wing Hoe Chinese Restaurant where our guest speaker was Alderman Joe Moore. The signs that we are holding say "Dean for DNC Chair." One of our first activities was to show our support for Gov. Howard Dean to be elected as chair of the DNC (Democratic National Committee).

Later that year another DFA group, the Heartland DFA, decided to merge with us and we became the Edgewater/Heartland DFA Group. Eventually the name was changed to the Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA Group.

In 2007 we decided to take some bold steps to expand the group, including setting up our first-ever bank account, holding our first fundraiser, creating an database of members and holding issue forums to increase our membership. We also decided to change our name to Northside DFA.

An important part of our Monthly Meetings has always been creating social bonds between our members. Therefore, all of our meeting sites have been at restaurants or bars with catered food that have separate rooms for us.

In 2008 the group outgrew Wing Hoe and met briefly at Furama in Uptown and Calo in Andersonville. In 2009, we moved to Fizz Bar in Lakeview and in 2011 to the Lincoln Restaurant in North Center. Since the closure of the Lincoln in December 2013, NDFA has met at Mirabelle and Chief O'Neill's. Please check our Events listing for the site of our next Monthly Meeting.
