City-wide campaigns and their importance

Sometimes it feels like it's so hard to make a difference in this city: the Machine is so entrenched, and what can we do against precinct captains who have known their neighbors for generations?

But here is the thing: if we don't try, nothing will ever change. By supporting candidates who are trying to run against the Machine, we are reminding our Elected Officials that they do not serve in a fiefdom, they do have to face the voters -- and the voters have a choice. Each contested race is a victory as we try to change the way things are done, as we try to remind Chicagoans that we do, in fact, live in a democracy and that democracy means thinking for ourselves.

So please: go out and help the campaign of your choice. There should be a campaign close to your home you can volunteer for -- is volunteering ever easier when there is no commute? Or find one that has inspired you. The Northside DFA adopted and endorsed candidates this cycle are: Miguel Del Valle, running for Mayor (no excuses: no matter where you live in the City of Chicago, this applies to you!), John Arena, running for Alderman of the 45th Ward, Greg Brewer, running for Alderman of the 50th Ward, Scott Waguespack, incumbent Alderman of the 32nd Ward, James Cappelman, running for Alderman of the 46th Ward, Mary Hunter, running for Alderman of the 39th Ward, Ameya Pawar, running for Alderman of the 47th Ward. Please find someone you can support and go out and volunteer!

Spent my election day

in the 49th Ward doing GOTV, then went to John Arena's party. Let me just say that election parties for winning candidates (not a total win yet but getting in the runoff was great) are much more fun than ones where the candidate doesn't win. :-)
